Creating a theme room is one of the more enjoyable ways to decorate your home, but it can also be one of the most challenging. Many a theme room is over the top, which can detract from the decor throughout the rest of the home. You can create a tasteful theme room if you exercise moderation. Combining classic styles and pieces with themed elements is important.
It is wise to add classic pieces that can be re-used when the novelty of the theme room wears off and you decide to redecorate. It is also a good idea to set a budget and stick to it. Theme rooms are great fun, but it is too easy to overspend. You will be tempted to purchase every item you find that corresponds with your theme. Resist this temptation and limit yourself to only high quality pieces and only those that coordinate with the other items in your space.
Stay within your chosen color scheme, using only coordinating and complementary colors. Just because something fits your theme, does not mean it fits your space. You can of course change the look of a certain item, if you find something you just have to have. A little paint will quickly make an otherwise unusable piece fit right in.
Creating a theme room does not mean anything goes. The space should still be cohesive and comfortable. Choose only the items you really love and that will compliment your design plan, instead of packing every available inch of space with accessories that represent your theme. If you realize you have gone a bit overboard, take a few things back.
Apply the rule of moderation to gifts from well meaning friends and relatives as well. Once you let people in on your idea for a theme room, they will undoubtedly want to "help." Often, people will pick up a trinket here and there that goes with your theme. It is a nice gesture, but there may come a time when you have to let them know that you don't have the space for any more gifts.
You will also come across new items, even after you feel your theme room is finished. As you add a new item, remove something else. Donate the items you no longer need or find someone else who might like them. Enjoy yourself as you decorate your space and let these tips guide you toward creating the perfect theme room.
