Owning a gas washer and dryer is a great way to save money on a necessary household expense. However, chances are that your home was set up with electric washer and dryer connections. Before you can enjoy your new appliances, you will need to install gas connections. If that is the case, here are a couple of tips on how to have hookups for your washer and dryer installed.

One of the first places you can look for help in getting gas laundry hookups installed would be your local gas company. Some gas companies maintain a staff of experts who will come out and install your hookups, and even connect your new gas powered appliances for you. This can be a great solution for two reasons. First, the gas company is often willing to break down the charges for the installation as an addendum to your monthly service over a period of several months. Second, the gas company needs to inspect new connections to their gas lines anyway, so you can have the hookups installed and approved at the same time.

Should your local gas company not keep experts on staff to install new hookups, they most likely do have a list of vendors they work with locally. You can obtain a few recommendations from them and then contact the vendors directly. While you will still need to have the gas company come out and sign off on the work, there is a good chance that you will save a few dollars on the hookups. Having the local utility do the work is convenient and also great if you can’t afford to pay the whole amount at once, but chances are the independent vendor will charge less for the installation. If you can afford to pay for the hookups in full, then this might be your best option.

Keep in mind that, no matter who installs the hookups for your new gas washer and dryer, the work will have to be inspected and approved by the gas company before you begin to use your appliances. This will involve scheduling a date for a representative to come out and make sure the hookups and the connections are secure and there is no danger to the household. The washer and dryer may also be inspected to make sure there are not any internal leaks of gas that might cause any type of issue in the future. Inspections usually do not take longer than 30 minutes, unless a problem is discovered. Once the inspection is complete and both the appliances and the new connections have been certified, you can begin to enjoy the cost savings and ease of operation that come with owning your own gas washer and dryer.

I have used both electric and gas washers and dryers, and personally I prefer the electric models. I think they work better and do a better job cleaning and drying clothes.

Installing a gas washer and dryer in a home that is not initially equipped for them is a major job that should not be taken lightly. If you are planning to change your electrical washer and dryer to gas models, you will be happy with the money you save on your energy bill once they are installed. However, the first step you will need to take is to hire a licensed contractor who understands how to install gas appliances.

If you don't know where to search for a qualified person to do this type of work, this article makes a good point that you should start by calling your local gas department. You can also look in your local newspaper and online, though you should always check the credentials of anyone you are thinking about hiring to do this type of important work.

Once the hookups are installed, all you have to do is give your gas company a call for an inspection so you can hookup your gas washer and drying and begin using them.
