A wall hung toilet is a European twist on the traditional pedestal throne which can add flair and style to any bathroom decor. Unlike tradition toilets, the wall hung variety does not incorporate a floor mounted vertical pedestal. As the name indicates, the pan is attached directly to the wall through which the outlet pipe runs and flushes via a direct feed valve or a conventional tank or cistern. Although they may look a little flimsy, wall hung toilets are surprisingly strong although and can support a significant amount of weight. They also offer several space saving features which compliment their visual appeal.

Conventional toilet bowls are fitted onto an upright pedestal which mounts onto the floor. The toilet outlet fitting is then connected to the external soil pipe via an extension pipe which penetrates the wall behind the pedestal assembly. A wall hung toilet differs in that it mounts directly to the wall by means of a purpose built frame typically of one piece construction. The rest of the plumbing is more or less standard and requires little if any modification if a wall hung toilet is replacing a conventional one.

Wall hung toilets may incorporate a standard tank type flush mechanism or be fitted with a simple flush valve fitted to a decorative water inlet pipe. Several types of flush valve systems are available such as the dual flush version. These valves feature two separate flush controls which release different quantities of water for liquid and solid waste. These systems can save thousands of gallons of water a year and are definitely in line with modern water conservation trends.

A wall mounted toilet is not only a stylish addition to any bathroom but also saves space. The fact that the toilet is mounted flush against the wall and has no floor space gobbling pedestal means a lot of extra bathroom space. This is particularly true of the models without tanks. Cleaning bathroom floors is also a breeze since there are no dirt accumulating, hard to access nooks and crannies behind the toilet.

A wall hung toilet may look like a medical insurance claim waiting to happen but they are actually very strong. A correctly installed wall hung toilet can safely carry 1,000 pounds (450 kilograms). The exact mounting procedures for this type of toilet will differ, however, according to the type of wall involved. Most suppliers will be able to give do it yourself (DIY) enthusiasts expert advice regarding the exact requirements and procedures. As with most big plumbing installations, it is often best though to enlist the help of a professional when deciding to install a wall hung toilet.
